Lance's Gyarados VS 098/141 PSA10: Half Deck Buying Guide

Quick answer

Buy the PSA10 Lance's Gyarados VS 098/141 if you collect Japanese Half Deck Leaders cards or Lance-themed species and want a graded, tamper-evident copy without chasing raw singles. Skip it if you mainly collect English promos or prefer lower-cost raw cards for binder sets.

Why the Half Deck origin changes the buying decision

This Gyarados comes from the Japanese VS series Half Deck sub-sets, not a standard booster set. That matters because Half Deck cards were distributed in smaller, themed configurations, so raw supply is thinner than main-set cards and graded copies are less common. The catalog title lists several Half Deck themes (Water Flame, Grass and Thunder, Fighting Super, and Movie Limited Edition), which tells you the card belongs to a multi-theme release rather than a single print run.

For a buyer, the practical effect is that you are competing for a niche card. If you specifically want a Lance's Gyarados in a PSA10 holder, waiting for another copy may take longer than waiting for a mainstream set card. That scarcity supports the price but also makes it harder to comparison-shop.

What PSA10 does and does not tell you

A PSA10 grade means the card was professionally graded and sealed in a tamper-evident holder, and each slab carries a unique PSA certification number. That gives you a verifiable condition benchmark and protects the card from handling wear. It does not tell you the card's centering, surface appeal, or eye appeal beyond the grade, and it does not guarantee future value.

The catalog also states 100% authentic guaranteed and fast tracked shipping. Use those as service assurances, not as condition details. If you care about centering or print quality within the PSA10 range, ask for the certification number and check the photos before buying.

Price trade-off: graded versus raw

The catalog price is USD 1,894.17 against a comparison price of USD 2,705.96. That gap is a discount signal, not proof of market value. A PSA10 commands a premium over raw because of the grading and encapsulation, but you are paying for convenience and condition certainty as much as the card itself.

If your goal is a binder collection, a raw copy of the same Half Deck card would let you handle it and save money, though you would need to assess condition yourself. If your goal is a display piece or a graded set, the PSA10 premium is easier to justify.

Decision rules for buying this card

• If you are building a Lance or Gyarados species collection: Treat this PSA10 as a centerpiece candidate. Confirm the PSA certification number and check that the slab and label match the listing photos before purchase. Ask for the certification number before paying.
• If you are completing a Japanese VS Half Deck set: Prioritize this card only if your set checklist includes the Half Deck Leaders release. Verify the set symbol and card number VS 098/141 against your checklist, because Half Deck themes can be confused with main-set prints.
• If you are price-sensitive or new to graded cards: Compare the catalog price against recent sold listings for PSA10 copies of this exact card, not against raw or ungraded prices. If the gap is wider than you are comfortable with, wait for another copy or consider a raw example. Set a maximum price before you start comparing.
• If you mainly collect English cards or modern promos: Pass on this card. The Japanese Half Deck origin and VS series context are the main reasons to buy it, and those factors do not transfer to English-set goals.
